Enchytraeus japonensis is a small oligochaete (Annelid) that reproduces mainly asexually by fragmentation (autotomy) and regeneration. The asexually reproduced worms are genetically identical clones and artificial autotomy can be induced by application of electric shock, decapitation or amputation.It has a unique life-cycle in which it can proliferate by asexual or sexual reproduction and both asexual and sexual reproduction cycles can be controlled experimentally within a short period.
