Annually, approximately 7.6 million companion animals are admitted to animal shelters across the United States. Many of these animals are abandoned by their owners, while others are rescued after getting lost or suffering from abuse. A large number of these animals find their forever homes with loving new families, but many others are not so fortunate. Each year, an estimated 2.7 million dogs and cats in the U.S. are euthanized. Using a dataset of intake information—including breed, color, sex, and age—collected by the Austin Animal Center, we invite Kagglers to predict the outcome for each animal.

We further believe that this dataset can help uncover meaningful trends among these animals. These insights can enable animal shelters to focus their efforts on specific groups of animals that require additional assistance to secure permanent adoptive homes. We encourage you to publish your analytical insights and scripts for public access.
