Comparison of the RNAseq data generated in this work with the protein data reported by Gan et al. (2013) [69] for their cluster 4, which comprises proteins more abundant during spermiogenesis (RS and elongating spermatids) than in earlier stages. For both data sets 2C population was taken as a reference, and RNA as well as protein ratios (RATIOm and RATIOp, respectively) between the analyzed cell populations were calculated accordingly. The quantitative relationship between RNA and protein levels was determined at the transitions 2C-PS and PS-RS (RATIOmp = RATIOm/RATIOp). As in Gan’s report, RATIOmp ≥ 2 at the 2C/PS transition was interpreted as translational repression, while RATIOmp ≤ 0.5 at the PS/RS transition was assigned to translational de-repression. Red crosses (right column) indicate the transcripts within this group that would be translationally repressed during PS and de-repressed later on at RS. (XLSX 65 kb)
