Mengenilla moldrzyki strain:ON-2011 Genome sequencing and assembly

Strepsiptera are endopterygote insects with highly derived morphology and life history. This has made inferring their phylogenetic relationship one of the most persistent problems in entomology (?The Strepsiptera problem?). We present the draft-genome of a newly discovered Strepsiptera of the in many aspects plesiomophic family Mengenillidae from the Tunisian Sahara. The aim of the genome sequencing was (1) to infer the phylogenetic relationship of Strepsiptera to other Endopterygota, (2) to provide the most detailed description of a newly discovered insect species up to this date that includes both comprehensive morphological and molecular data, and (3) to assess problems associated with sequencing a veritable non-model organism.
