S. maltophilia OR02 was isolated from a heavy metal contaminated site in Oak Ridge, TN and is resistant to ampicillin and salts of mercury, zinc, cadmium, copper, arsenic, gold, chromium, lead and selenium. The goal of annotating this genome is to identify known resistance genes and use transposon mutagenesis to identify unknown resistance mechanisms in this microorganism. Since S. maltophilia is sometimes a pathogen, understanding the resistance-mechanisms may reveal strategies for treating disease caused by this microorganism.
