Probing a giant radio jet and its environs with X-ray observations

We propose XMMNewton observations of CGCG 049033, a unique radio galaxy containing a highly polarized giant radio jet and a single radio lobe. The peculiarradio structure of the radio galaxy implies a highly unusual hotgasenvironment. SDSS images and spectra show that the host galaxy is the dominantmember of a group of galaxies interacting with the nearby poor cluster Abell2040. Our proposed observations will characterise the environment of the radiosource and determine why it produces the observed radio structures. Bydetermining physical conditions in the external medium, we will investigate theconfinement of this largescale jet.
