Plate tectonics is a key process that makes our planet habitable. It is primarily defined by global tectonic movements, such as subduction. However, when plate tectonics emerged on Earth is still debated. The modern style plate tectonics operating nowadays is characterized by cold subduction. Before that, an ancient style plate tectonics with a warm tectonic regime perhaps had developed in the Archean. Here we identify two distinct high-pressure metamorphic events in the Archean and Paleoproterozoic from the well-preserved Kola eclogites in the Fennoscandia. The Archean event represents a high-pressure omphacite-stable metamorphism under warm tectonic conditions. The Paleoproterozoic metamorphism is eclogite facies due to cold subduction. Each event has relevant global counterparts, marking ancient and modern style plate tectonics operation. The Kola eclogites have registered the tectonic style shift from the Archean to Paleoproterozoic by undergoing two-time high-pressure metamorphism to eclogite facies.
