Among these features, there are 4 islands, 15 reefs, 3 sand cays, 5 banks and 2 submerged shoals. The dataset includes the name, geographical location, type, and the year of occupation by Vietnam for each feature. Specifically, 9 features were occupied in the 1970s, including Hongxiu Island, Anbo Sand Cay, Dunqian Sand Cay, Jinghong Island, Nanwei Island, Nanzi Island, Bisheng Reef and Ranqing Sand Cay; 13 features were occupied in the 1980s, including Zhong Reef, Bolan Reef, Daxian Reef, Dong Reef, Guihan Reef, Liumen Reef, Naluo Reef, Nanhua Reef, Riji Reef, Wumie Reef, Xi Reef, Baijiao Reef, Qiong Reef and Wan'an Bank; and 7 features were occupied in the 1990s, including Guangya Bank, Pengbobao Reef, Renjun Bank, Lizhun Bank, Xiwei Bank, Aonan Submerged Shoal and Jindun Submerged Shoal. The dataset is stored in .shp and .kmz formats, with a compressed size of 6.5 KB. The research paper based on this dataset was published in *Tropical Geography*, Volume 35, Issue 5, 2015.
