资源简介:
A second season of field work was undertaken in the Ohio Range of the Horlick Mountains as a three fold geological study to complete the stratigraphy of the area. This included an analysis of the abundant trace fossils of the Devonian Horlick Formation, a detailed assessment of the glacial Buckeye Formation and post-glacial Discovery Ridge Formation, and a study of the very thick overlying Permian Coal Measures. The Mount Glossopteris coal measures were studied on Mercer and Terrace Ridges of Mount Schopf and the Canyon Peak area from a camp on Terrace Ridge. Coal measures were also studied on Mount Glossopteris and Quartz Pebble Hill from the upper Discovery Ridge camp, as well as the Discovery Ridge Formation lower in these sequences. The party worked along the whole of the escarpment using other camps, and by sledging round the western end of the range, the group got easier access to the Horlick Formation on Discovery Ridge and a spur further east. Recollection of lithofacies in the Horlick Formation was carried out for thin section analysis to test certain deductions from previous sampling. Several new sections in the Horlick formation were measured. Fine grained samples from the Buckeye Formation and the Discovery Ridge Formation were collected for pollen analysis. The coal petrology of the Mt Glossopteris Formation was determined. A detailed analysis was undertaken on the Trace fossils were widely photographed and collected wherever possible for further study. Numerous well preserved and very large Glossopteris leaves were collected for future research.
