Teacher education in New South Wales, 1980: teacher survey

The purpose of this survey was to study general characteristics of and views about teacher education of teachers practising in the education system. Two further surveys were also conducted within the same study to establish the views of student teachers and teacher educators on issues related to teacher education [SSDA Study Nos. 194 and 195]. Topics covered include: when choice of teaching career was made; evaluation of activities which enhance effectiveness as a teacher; overall satisfaction with work as a teacher; supervision of student teachers; career aspirations; in-service activities; comparative views on the purpose of schooling; evaluation of teacher training experience including structure of courses, course content, selection for teacher education courses and appointment to teaching service and induction procedures; pre-service training. Background variables include: sex; age; current employment position and classification; amount and type of teaching experience; size of current school; current study; ethnicity; education of parents; other work experience; secondary education; initial teacher education; upgrading of initial qualifications; membership of teachers associations.
