Teacher adoption of an autonomy-supportive and motivating teaching style is a key factor in nurturing student inner motivational resources. Among the range of factors favouring its adoption is teacher self-compassion. This study aimed at assessing the hypothesis that an online self-compassion training tailored for teachers increases not only self-compassion but also adoption of a motivating teaching style. Eighty-two teachers filled in measures of self-compassion and adoption of (de)motivating styles. Then they either participated in four weekly sessions during which they participated in self-compassion induction activities, or they served as a waiting list control group. Finally, they filled in the same questionnaires. The results confirmed an increase in self-compassion and adoption of an autonomy-supportive teaching style in teachers who participated in self-compassion induction activities. Implications for teachers and students are discussed.
