A Battery Pot Lamp

* Origin: England * Producer: Nife * Height: 28cm * Diameter: 8.5cm This battery pot lamp came to the Netherlands after the Second World War (in early 1946). It was powered by an acid battery which could burn for 8-10 hours. Moreover, this lamp was used at 2 mines, the Willem-Sophia in Spekholzerheide and the Oranje-Nassau Mijn 3 in Heerlerheide. However, compared with other miner lamps, it cannot be opened on the underground instead can only be opened above ground in the lamp rooms. That's because the mining gas can be present on the underground of the mine. When the voltage of the battery or the battery itself mixes with the mine gas, it can easily cause a spark leading to a (fatal) explosion.
