Jordan's Journey: A Preliminary Report on the 1992 Excavations at Archaeological Sites 44PG302, 44PG303, and 44PG315

This report presents technical information and preliminary interpretations of the results of archaeological studies conducted during the period March 1992-October 1993 at three sites on Jordan’s Point, Prince George County, Virginia. The studies were conducted as part of an on-going effort to rescue vital archaeological materials and data threatened by development on the Point. Four sites received considerable attention this year, but one of those — 44PG307 — will be the subject of a separate report pending completion of excavations during the spring of 1993. The three sites discussed here — 44PG302, 44PG315, and 44PG303 — represent a variety of different occupations. Of primary interest are a protohistoric Weyanoke settlement, an early 17th century fortified colonial village known as “Jordan’s Journey,” and a building probably constructed by Richard Bland II during the period just prior to the Revolutionary War. Substantial elements of the Weyanoke and Jordan’s Journey settlements have been excavated elsewhere on the Point. A detailed discussion of these components at one site, 44PG302, and a more complete discussion of the history and purpose of the project, have been presented in a previous report (Mouer, McLearen, et al. 1992).

The 1992-1993 season included a total of seven months of field work. Nonetheless, the information from a site complex as important as that at Jordan’s Point needs to be disseminated as quickly as possible. The reader should keep in mind, however, that this is a preliminary report. As analysis and contemplation of the results continue, there may be — almost certainly will be — changes in interpretations.
