Texas Oil & Gas Wells and Drilling Permits — County-Level Statistics (2026)

County-level statistics for oil and gas activity in Texas, compiled from Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) public bulk data: 1,006,559 wellbore records across 275 counties with their reported status (producing, shut in, injection) and the number of distinct operators on record, plus every drilling permit filed between 2026-03-01 to 2026-07-20 (4,120 permits, 80% of them horizontal) broken out by county, with the count of operators filing in each. Aggregate county rollups only — individual permit and wellbore records are not included. Scope limits: the permit window starts 2026-03-01, where our load of the RRC daily permit feed reaches full monthly strength — this is not the complete historical RRC permit record. Well status is blank on about two-thirds of RRC wellbore records, so status columns count coded records only. Rule 37/38 spacing-exception counts are excluded: the RRC stopped populating those fields in mid-2024.
