Atmospheric mercury pollution recorded in conifer tree rings: Disentangling the effects of tree-ring width, water content, and climate on mercury concentrations - data and code

This dataset contains the data and R code for the article “Atmospheric mercury pollution recorded in conifer tree rings: Disentangling the effects of tree-ring width, water content, and climate on mercury concentrations” (Boonen et al., 2025).

It contains the following files:
- Hg: mercury concentrations (ng/g) measured in European larch and Douglas fir tree rings;
- TRW: tree-ring widths (mm) of these tree rings;
- Water content: water content (%) in these tree rings;
- SWHW: indicates whether the tree ring is in the sapwood or heartwood;
- Daily precipitation: total daily precipitation (mm) at the Kočkov station in Ústí nad Labem (Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, 2022);
- Daily temperature: average daily air temperature (°C) at the Kočkov station in Ústí nad Labem (Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, 2022);
- Hg_air_Usti: contains data on Hg emissions to air from the chlor-alkali plant (kg/year) and atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations (ng/m³). These data are obtained from the Czech Environmental Information Agency (2022), the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (2023a,b) and Spolchemie (2023).
