Associations in Art & Photography

The data was created for a paper presented for a lecture presentation at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association in Washington, D.C. on August 4th, 2000. It was based upon research I did on the subject of associations in order to study their role and use in photography and art. This paper shows how they are caused and what they mean in order to better understand them. In this paper I describe some ways to make sure that associations are valid, some techniques to create associations, associations and the subconscious, a passive approach to your associations, an active approach to your associations personal vs. universal symbol associations, the symbol immersion technique, carrying the symbol forward and backward in time, symbol amplification and dialoguing in relation to pictures, symbol associations and symbol linking, stimulating the mind to create associations and various techniques to create them such as the use of Synchronicity Techniques like the I Ching. Finally, it gives some photographic illustrations.
