Multiple simultaneous double-strand breaks were generated at the centromeres in Cryptococcus neoformans. The recovered isolates exhibited multiple chromosome translocations as compared to the wild-type strains. The chromosome shuffled strains showed a reproductive barrier and failed to undergo a successful meiosis.
