Immigrants from Brazil to Japan 1984-2022

In 2022, approximately 209 thousand foreign residents from Brazil were living in Japan, representing an increase from approximately 204 thousand in the previous year. Many foreign residents from Brazil are so-called nikkeijin, descendants of Japanese emigrants, who return to Japan for employment reasons. Numbers declined after the global financial crisis of 2007 and 2008, but slightly recovered in recent years.
