Within the Panaphis genus, pseudogenisation of a biotin biosynthetic gene in the Panaphis juglandis' lineage Buchnera last common ancestor rendered Buchnera unable to supply this essential nutrient to the aphid, and thus triggered the establishment of a secondary co-obligate endosymbiont. Through whole-genome sequencing, we determined that Panaphis juglandis apparently harbours a Serratia symbiotica symbiont as Buchnera's co-obligate endosymbiont.
