The Western Tropical South Pacific (WTSP) is a region of the Pacific Ocean that is characterized as an oligotrophic environment, lacking nutrients that are considered essential to many microorganisms. Despite the low amounts of available iron, the WTSP is known as a hotspot for biological dinitrogen (N2) fixation. We investigated the potential for pumice to supply iron, and the microbial communities supported by the rock.
