Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a Gram-positive, potentially zoonotic bacterium that causes different diseases in small and large ruminants. As an intracellular pathogen, C. pseudotuberculosis is prone to adverse environmental conditions and should efficiently respond to both extracellular and intracellular changes. The study of the alternative sigma factors may provide important clues about the regulation of genes involved in virulence and survival within the host. A strain of C. pseudotuberculosis deficient for sigma C was generated through single-homologous recombination using a suicide commercial cloning plasmid carrying an internal sigC gene fragment and the 1002 wild-type as the parent strain.
