The central nature of employment has motivated intense research interest in peoples’ job search behavior, especially after being conceptualized as a self-regulatory behavior. Given the growing interest and the accumulated research outputs across multiple disciplines in the past two decades, a review and synthesis for much needed insights to guide future research investments is urgent. We identified and analysed 3,535 journal articles drawn from the SCOPUS database between 2001 and 2024 using bibliometric method. An illustrative science mapping demonstrates yearly trends, research collaborators, academic journals, and regions of publications. We found self-regulatory behavior, labor market, recruitment, unemployment, and employment as the major themes associated with job search behavior. We hope that our findings and their implications not only stimulate job search research and intensify collaboration among existing and emerging job search scholars in diverse geographical regions and scientific disciplines but make them more relevant to contemporary job search issues.
