The Port of Melbourne Authority (World Trade Centre) Act 1978 (No.9221) which came into operation on 19 December 1978, vested the Port of Melbourne Authority with authority to construct, maintain and operate a World Trade Centre in the Port of Melbourne.The World Trade Centre was sold on 16 May 1996 for $103 million. It was bought by a Malaysian consortium. During its final year in Government ownership it maintained a tenant occupancy rate at 96% or better which far exceeded the market average occupancy rate for the Melbourne Central Business District of 78%.
