VPRS 21020 Council of Judges Minute Books

This series comprises volumes recording meeting minutes of the Supreme Court of Victoria's Council of Judges. The Judges of the Supreme Court of Victoria are required under section 28 of the Supreme Court Act 1986 to meet at least annually to (a) consider the operation of this Act and the Rules; and (b) consider the working of the offices of the Court and the arrangements relating to the duties of the officers of the Court; and (c) inquire into and examine any defects which appear to exist in the system of procedure or the administration of the law in the Court and in any other court from which an appeal lies to the Court. The minutes record discussions relating to the organisation and administration of the court and its business. Matters discussed include but are not limited to the arrangement of court business (e.g. the allocation of judicial officers to particular lists), the state and repair of the court buildings, robes and wigs and proposals from the Attorney General for the administration of the court and justice.  The agendas and papers for these meetings are contained in Council of Judges Papers (VPRS 21025). Extant volumes in this series date from 1981, however it is likely that the records have been created for much longer. The whereabouts of any earlier volumes in the series is unknown.
