资源简介:
Research Background Weaver has contributed significant research into textiles and in particular their relationship to the fine art object. Ideas such as decay, camouflage and metamorphosis, the destruction of existing natural habitats and resulting decrease in biodiversity inform this work. In the context of this exhibition, Weaver highlights the long tradition of innovative textiles in Asian culture, and framed by the current technological age, questions the role these practices may have in contemporary art, Artists for this exhibition were selected for their contribution to ideas around social, political, economic and environmental perspectives in Asia. Research Contribution Exhibited high on a tree branch, 'Sooty Owl' emerges as an imaginary or futuristic hybrid that has 'adapted' to survive in our changing world. Natural and synthetic fibres have been crocheted over a found plastic form directly to create a metaphoric new skin; suggesting natures uncanny ability to adapt to potential environmental catastrophe and change. With this work Weaver has extended her innovative use of textile materials and their application for the sculptural object, and has increased the conceptual breadth of her practice concerning environmental issues in an Asian context. Research Significance The Jeonbuk Museum of Art is the largest provincial museum in Korea. Museum Director, Suk-wan Chang, is the former Director of the Gwangju Biennale (2004) and member of the selection panel for the Hong Kong pavilion of the 51st Venice Biennale. With a team of four co-curators, 35 artists from 14 Asian countries were selected. Co-exhibitors included artists Lee Ufan, Subodh Gupta, Manit Sriwanichpoom. As the only Australian artist invited to participate, Weaver's sculpture is highly esteemed in this uniquely Asian context. An International symposium, publication, and feature article for the Sept-Oct ed. of Art in Asia Magazine accompanied the exhibition.
