YOLOv5_FPC-Extracted Four-Panel-Cartoon (FPC) from Chosun Ilbo News Library (1920-1940)

This dataset consists of 1035 JPEG files, encompassing 1040 Four-Panel-Cartoon (FPC) objects. These were identified from the Chosun Ilbo Newspaper Digital Archives covering the period from 1920 to 1940, which can be accessed at https://newslibrary.chosun.com. The image extraction process was automated using the YOLOv5_FPC model, a fine-tuned iteration of the YOLOv5 model. Embedded within the file names are chronological details presented in a year, month, day format (e.g., 19240921), which help researchers pinpoint the exact publication dates of newspapers featuring FPCs. Additionally, upon examining individual newspaper files, researchers can notice date indicators (日 for day, 月 for month, 年 for year), located in the upper right corner of the image files. Our dataset includes FPCs which have not been discovered by previous researchers in the past. We hope that this dataset will encourage further global interdisciplinary discourse on the culture and history of Korea during 1920 to 1940, thereby shedding light on socio-cultural phenomena in modern Korea.
