PROBLEMS OF INTERLINGUAL EQUIVALENCE IN THE TRANSLATION OF NON-EQUIVALENT LEXIS

The article addresses the problem of interlingual equivalence in the translation of non-equivalent lexis as one of the most complex and debatable issues in contemporary translation theory. The evolution of approaches to equivalence is examined, ranging from formal-structural models to functional-semantic and cognitively oriented interpretations of this phenomenon. Particular attention is paid to non-equivalent lexis as a manifestation of cultural and cognitive asymmetry between languages, reflecting differences in the conceptualization of social, institutional, and cultural reality.
