Observational data: The mass balance of a glacier is the difference between accumulation and ablation losses (melting of snow and ice), expressed in water equivalent volume, over a hydrological year. Measurements are taken in situ using beacons inserted in the ice. For each one, we measure how much they protrude from the ice, enabling us to deduce gains or losses by comparison from one year to the next. At the same time, where melting is more active (glacier front), a geodetic measurement is made using DTM difference (DoD) from LiDAR point cloud acquisitions.
