The German Internet Panel (GIP) is an infrastructure project. The GIP is used to collect data on individual attitudes and preferences relevant to political and economic decision-making processes.
The questionnaire contains numerous experimental variations in the survey instruments. For more information, see the study documentation.
Topics: verification of stored data of the respondent such as surname, first name, sex, year of birth, mobile phone number and landline number and, if necessary, addition of mobile phone number and landline number or not specified; household composition: age and sex of up to four household members and their relationship to the respondent; current employment (full-time or part-time employment, partial retirement, mini-job, one-euro job, occasional or irregular employment, vocational training/apprenticeship, retraining, federal volunteer service, voluntary social/ecological/cultural year, maternity and parental leave, pupil, student, pensioner, unemployed, permanently unable to work, housewife/househusband); current or former main employment status; based on current or last paid activity: dependent employment, self-employed or assisting family member; fixed-term employment contract; employment in the public sector; economic sector employment; religion; religiousness; computer use besides the study; frequency of Internet usage for private purposes; frequency of private Internet usage per day; satisfaction with selected areas of life (family life, leisure, financial situation, work); social activities: active, passive, or no membership in selected organisations and associations (sports, music or cultural association, other hobby association, human rights, environmental or animal protection association, charity or aid organisation, religious or ecclesiastical organisation, youth, parents or senior citizens´ association, citizens´ initiative, professional association, trade union and political party); left-right self-assessment; party affiliation and party identification; personal net income (categorized); number of income contributin persons in the household; household income (categorized); voted in the 2017 federal election; voting choice election (second vote); vote intention; vote at last election.
Demography: highest educational degree; highest professional qualification; marital status; number of household members (household size); employment status; occupational status; state of principal residence; German nationality; (variables passed on: sex; year of birth (categorized); year of recruitment).
Additionally coded: unique ID; household and person ID within the household; interview date; current online status; experiment; questionnaire evaluation (interesting, varied, relevant, long, difficult, too personal); overall assessment of the survey.
