Dataset informationCommon name: Brain Institute - Federal University of Rio Grande do NorteFull name: ICe - UFRNAuthors: Draulio Araujo, Fernanda Palhano-Fontes, Katia Andrade, Sergio Mota-RolimLocation: Onofre Lopes University Hospital, Natal - BrazilYear: 2014-2016Set ID: 14Amendment: 0Corresponding author ID: 13Previous publications: This EEG data was not published yet. The main associated study is Palhano-Fontes et al. (2019). Rapid antidepressant effects of the psychedelic ayahuasca in treatment-resistant depression: a randomized placebo-controlled trial. Psychological medicine 49 (4), 655-663.Correspondence: sergioarthuro@neuro.ufrn.brMetadataKey ID: 15Date entered: 2023-04-28T05:48:21+00:00Number of samples: 41Number of subjects: 41Proportion REM: 49%Proportion N1: 12%Proportion N2: 39%Proportion W: 0%Proportion experience: 61%Proportion no-experience: 39%Proportion healthy: 100%Provoked awakening: YesTime of awakening: MorningForm of response: FreeDate approved: 2023-04-28T05:49:13+00:00How to decode data filesThe data contains EEG full night recordings of 41 subjects.NOTE: PSG files contain a period of silence at the end of the recording due to a limitation of the data format. For each of the 41 subjects, the dream reports are in PDF files, originally named J1-25 and O1-24. Each file represents a dream that a subject reported after awakening, from a whole night of sleep, at about 6:00h in the morning (6am - local time). The J and O groups are placebo and ayahuasca, but since the recordings were before the dosing session, you can just ignore these J and O groups. The reports are in written text format in Portuguese.Treatment group codesNo treatment.Experimental descriptionBefore sleeping, we asked subjects to perform 2 tasks. The first one consisted of 20 seconds of Eyes Open (EO) and 40 seconds of Eyes Closed (EC), 4 times. In the second task, subjects were asked to maintain their eyes closed for 5 minutes, and stay awake. After these tasks, subjects were allowed to sleep. We awakened the subjects at about 6:00h in the morning (6am - local time). After awakening, subjects were then asked if they remembered a dream. If yes, we asked them to report their experience. The free verbal report was recorded and transcribed into written text.We selected the subjects (n = 41) from the control group of a double-blind parallel-arm randomized placebo-controlled trial (Palhano-Fontes et al., 2018). Sleep recordings took place at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL), Natal-RN (Brazil). The University Hospital Research Ethics Committee approved the study (# 579.479), and all subjects provided written informed consent before participation.Sleep EEG recordings were acquired by Brain Products - Easy Cap with 32 channels, using FCz as a reference. The sampling frequency was 1kHz. At the beginning of each recording, we asked subjects to do some tasks for artifact recognition like moving their eyes, blinking, and chewing. Before sleeping, we asked subjects to perform 2 more tasks. DREAM categorization procedureAll dream reports were categorized according to the DREAM experience report categories based on subjects' free verbal reports. From the 41 reports during awakening from a night of sleep, 16 did not remember a dream (J3, J5, J6, J11, J12, J17, J18, J21, J22, J25, O1, O2, O5, O19, O20, O23).Technical detailsAt the beginning of each recording, we asked subjects to do some tasks for artifact recognition like moving their eyes, blinking, and chewing. Data acquisitionEEG data was acquired by a Brain Products - Easy Cap with 32 channels, using FCz as reference. The sampling frequency was 1kHz.Data preprocessingData has not been pre-processed.
