PERIOD: The area of Japan proper is based on the survey on June 21, 1938. The areas of Korea, Taiwan, South Sakhalin, Kwantung Province and South Pacific Mandate are at the end of 1937. NOTE: The circumference in this table is based on surveys of the Hydrographic Department and does not include the border between Korea and Sakhalin and the border of Kwantung Province. The area for Japan proper is based on surveys by the Land Survey Department, while areas other than Japan proper are based on surveys by the Foreign Office. The area of Japan proper is calculated by including half of the intertidal area in the topographical map at a scale of 1:50,000 based on the survey conducted by the Land Survey Department, General Staff Office on June 21, 1938 as land area. Also included are lakes and lagoons. Korea, Taiwan, Sakhalin, Kwantung Province, and the South Pacific Mandate were surveyed at 1937 year-end.
