DETECTION OF COLISTIN RESISTANCE IN GRAM NEGATIVE ORGANISMS ISOLATED FROM WATER AND HUMANS IN GHANA

This study investigated colistin resistance in Gram-negative bacteria from water sources and human stool samples in Ghana's Volta Region, addressing critical antimicrobial resistance surveillance gaps in sub-Saharan Africa. We observed high resistance rates of 52.1% in water and 57% in stool isolates, with PhoP gene detection in over 60% of samples. mcr genes were absent, indicating chromosomal rather than plasmid-mediated resistance mechanisms predominate in this West African setting.
