This dataset contains replication data and R code for the paper "Livestock Identification, Productive Coverage, and Household Income Security: Evidence from India" submitted to Agricultural Economics (IAAE, Wiley). The paper provides the first systematic empirical evaluation of India's Pashu Aadhar programme, the world's largest livestock identification system by registration volume (350.3 million registered animals across 763 districts and 36 states, 2021–2025), against its stated policy objectives of disease surveillance, livestock insurance delivery, and credit facilitation. Data Sources The derived analytical datasets are constructed from four primary sources: (1) Pashu Aadhar Registration Database, DAHD, Government of India (2021–2025); (2) State and UT-wise Production of Major Livestock Products, National Dairy Authority (2020–21); (3) NSS 77th Round Situation Assessment Survey of Agricultural Households (SAS 2019), Schedule 33.1, NSO, Government of India; (4) 20th Livestock Census (2019), DAHD. Files Included Master_Replication_Data.csv: State-level analytical dataset (33 states, 16 variables) including total registrations, Individual and Flock mode counts by species, milk output, 2019 Census small ruminant population, Bovine Coverage Gap Index (CGI_bovine), Small Ruminant CGI (CGI_sr), Flock Intensity Index (FII), Livestock Income Share (LIS), Crop Income Dispersion (CID), Livestock Income Security Index (LISI), cluster assignment, and LISI quadrant. LISI_Final_Analysis.csv: State-level LISI dataset (28 states with complete data) including CGI_bovine, LIS, CID, LISI, cluster, and quadrant classifications used for welfare alignment analysis and Spearman correlation (rs = −0.581, p = 0.001). Species_CGI_Flock_Analysis.csv: Full species-mode breakdown by state including bovine individual registrations, small ruminant Individual and Flock totals, CGI_bovine, CGI_sr, and FII (%). Pashu_Aadhar_Replication.R: Complete R replication script covering all nine analytical steps: data cleaning, annual dynamics, shift-share decomposition, species-specific CGI construction, k-means cluster analysis, Ward linkage robustness, welfare alignment regression (quantile regression and Spatial Error Model), LISI construction, and Maharashtra HHI analysis. Key Constructs CGI_bovine = Individual bovine registrations / (milk output + 1). FII = Flock-mode small ruminant registrations / (total small ruminant registrations + 1) × 100. LISI = LIS_norm × CID_norm × 100. Access Note The original Pashu Aadhar registration database extract is available from DAHD, Government of India. NSS 77 SAS 2019 microdata are publicly available from the NSO. All derived data in this deposit are freely available without restriction.
