Florida Tech’s LiDAR wind profiler (ZephIR 300) and Wireless Sensor Network System (WSNS) anemometry / barometric pressure sensor were deployed for three extended periods during typical weather conditions at the WSNS residential test site in Satellite Beach, Florida (Latitude 28.175748°, Longitude -80.593326°). The first of the collection periods took place 27 April - 10 June 2022. The second was from 1 October - 7 November 2022, between hurricanes Ian and Nicole. The third and final collection period took place from 8 November 2023 - 14 March 2024.
For both data collection periods, an RM Young anemometer (model 05103 V) was mounted to the test residence east roof gable at a height of 5.8 m AGL. The anemometer, part of the WSNS system, sampled winds at 1 Hz. A Young Gill pressure port (model 61002) was also deployed as part of the WSNS system to measure absolute barometric pressure (~ 1 m AGL, 10 Hz) at the test location. The Florida Tech LiDAR was placed in a secured yard ~ 50 m across the street and configured to measure at 11 different range gates which differ for each experiment. Additional meteorological data (ambient air temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure) were collected from an independent Airmar meteorological station on top of the LiDAR at 1 m AGL.
The calibrated pressure and anemometer data along with LiDAR wind data are available for viewing and download. Each data collection period is published as a different experiment. More information on the available datasets can be found in each experiment description and supporting documents. The project aims to collect and relate wind data from near roof height to that above the canopy layer for wind loading purposes as well as surface roughness estimations.
