In today's society workers meet demands to competence which largely involves the ability to adapt in response to new tasks and challenges. They have to grow and learn in their daily work to gain access to employment - where the demands of the workers are constantly changing. This project focuses on the learning and skills needed in the workplace. It focuses on the educational and training needs of employees in a range of companies within automotive, health, crafts and trade businesses. Two groups are given special attention: immigrants and apprentices. The project deals with the results of a survey, interviews and observational studies. Various sectors have been studied with respect to employees' background, affiliation to the work and knowledge of potential trainers and training programs in the workplace. It was found that for the workers space to act and relationships were important. One found that characteristics such as belonging, freedom, working and influence were characteristics that were considered more important than characteristics such as career, creativity and commitment.
