This study aimed to characterize the parasite Perkinsus Olseni isolated from the NZ green-lipped mussel Perna canaliculus. In vitro culture of the parasite was successfully developed in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium-Ham's F-12 culture medium. Parasite morphology and life cycle were described and a suspected additional reproductive mode which commonly occurred under poor nutrition was observed. The optimal temperature for the parasite growth was defined and supplementation of the culture media tested.
