This study elucidates specific sex differences in beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gut microbiome of People With HIV (PWH) with a history of hazardous alcohol consumption. The findings from this study are clinically relevant as they help develop evidence based probiotics different for men and women. The sex-based differences in predictive bacterial gene expression results from inferred metagenomics (PICRUSt2) analysis particularly in the context of beneficial butyrate producers provides a link to future studies aimed at evaluating functional characteristics of the gut microbiome.
