Arctic surface marine heatwave statistics compiled across published studies

Data used for producing Figure 2 and Supplementary Figure 3 in the article provisionally entitled: "Polar processes set Arctic marine heatwaves apart", Athanase et al. (Communications Earth & Environment). Marine heatwave statistics for key metrics where aggregated across the available 15 peer-reviewed studies focusing on the Arctic. Global studies were excluded on the grounds that the MHW metrics in individual Arctic sector cannot be reliably extracted from the provided figures or tables. The detailed list of all 15 studies as well as their DOI is provided in Supplementary Table 1 of "Polar processes set Arctic marine heatwaves apart", Athanase et al.For each retained study, we visually extract the range of reported values for each metric within each Arctic sub-region, except where a single event-averaged or regionally-averaged value is reported. Where no data are available for a given metric, the entry is an empty field. Metrics are aggregated at the following resolutions: Mean intensity (°C): bins of 0.1°C Mean duration (days): bins of 5 days Mean frequency (events per year): bins of 0.5 events per year That is, we report the minimum and maximum values for each of the above metrics. Values are provided for each study, and distributed across seven oceanographically-distinct sectors of the Arctic Ocean, as shown in Fig. 1 of Athanase et al.
