Extended Data for ''Comparison of the Efficacy and Safety between Chemotherapy and Targeted Therapy in Managing the Deadliest Cancer Types: A Systematic Review"

This systematic review aims to analyze the safety and efficacy of traditional chemotherapy in comparison to targeted therapy across the most fatal cancer types. The novelty of its findings lies in presenting a crucial avenue for the assessment of treatment effectiveness and safety of different treatment modalities in three cancer types, which have not been assessed together in one paper to this date yet, delineating the preferable treatment strategies for them and offering guidance for oncologists when undertaking therapeutic decisions. This could potentially impact healthcare policies and resource allocations. Besides, according to the review findings, this paper provided further recommendations based on the gaps identified to guide future research endeavors and advance personalized medicine. Such findings relate to the oncology field by shaping clinical guidelines comprehensively on the treatment of lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma, optimizing treatment algorithms, and making contributions to ongoing efforts in precision oncology by reinforcing the role of targeted therapy in enhancing patient outcomes, especially when chemotherapy has limited efficacy or significant toxicity in certain settings.
