Since 2000, the number of hospitals in Greece has been steadily falling. In 2022, there were 265 hospitals in the country, which is the lowest number in the provided time interval. In 2013, the number of hospitals in the country fell below three hundred and has remained below since then. Healthcare employees in Greece Although the number of healthcare institutions has fallen in Greece, the number of personnel working there has fluctuated since 2000. The number of workers in hospitals in Greece overall increased from 2002 to 2021. Since 2006, the number of physicians in Greece has increased overall, going from approximately 59.6 thousand in 2009 to 68.4 thousand in 2022.Expenditure in the health sector Greece’s expenditure on healthcare was 8.6 percent of its GDP in 2022. This share has experienced fluctuations since 2010 which may be explained by the unstable economic situation in the country since the financial crisis. In comparison to other European countries, this makes Greece the middle of the road when ranked in 2023 among other countries. Switzerland had the highest share of expenditure on health, spending 12 percent of its GDP in this year.
