This paper-based collection (1936-1943) relating to Wilfred Prest, Professor of Economics at the University of Melbourne 1946-1972 and conductor of a social survey in suburban Melbourne in the early 1940s. The collection includes correspondence and reports regarding interviews with representatives of various trade and unions, conducted for a Treasury Advisory Committee to provide information about employment, labour shortages and business activity (July 1940-December 1941). Social Survey: data collected for a survey of households in metropolitan Melbourne, including size and type of dwelling, rent, employment etc. (1941-1943). Suburbs surveyed were Box Hill, Brighton, Brunswick, Camberwell, Caulfield, Chelsea, Coburg, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Footscray, Hawthorn, Heidelberg, Kew, Malvern, Melbourne, Moorabbin, Northcote, Oakleigh, Port Melbourne, Prahran, Preston, Richmond, Sandringham, South Melbourne, St. Kilda, Williamstown, Braybrook (Sunshine). Also, shared houses Prahran-South Yarra, St. Kilda; Incomplete forms. Also includes replies to circulars asking for cooperation in survey (Nov.1941- Sept. 1942); Coding sheet; Government and other reports on social conditions (1914, 1936-1941); calculations of food needed by a family; award wages for various trades.
