Between 1896 and 1914, at the height of the Belle Époque, the eastern Mediterranean was crisscrossed by a large number of Salento music bands, on the routes of new shipping companies. So many musicians - hired to entertain holidaymakers - travelled from Corfu to Athens to Constantinople and neighboring land. Their Italian repertoire was much appreciated, 'sung' as it was by winds "pieni di passione". The names of excellent ensembles and conductors (Luigi Papadia da Matino, Alfonso Visconti e Vincenzo Gizzi da Galatina, Mario Marzano da Nardò, Luigi Scorrano da Casarano...) surface; with their adventurous journeys they experienced an authentic brotherhood of peoples, before the World War broke this musical network.
