This series contains the Office of Geographic Names (OGN) documentation of the administration and registration of geographic place names in Victoria. Records reflect that geographic naming is a consultative process between the OGN, and local city councils, schools, VicRoads, and other government agencies and individuals. The series covers locality naming, road naming, and adhoc naming matters.Records include the documentation of the decision making process for the naming of new, and re-naming existing streets, schools, parks and reserves, bridges, and suburb boundaries. It also includes unsuccessful renaming proposals. Usually included is a record of correspondence and consultation between Government agencies and stakeholders and residents; reasoning and justification of a proposal and decisions made; minutes of meetings; project briefs/reports; plans and maps; other research and planning resources; briefing sent to the relevant Government Minister; and Notice of Registration of Geographic Names, as published in the Victoria Government Gazette.The OGN assists the Registrar of Geographic Names by liaising with naming authorities such as municipal councils, government departments and authorities to ensure the VICNAMES register is regularly updated. The Registrar of Geographic Names receives naming proposals from naming authorities to name or rename a feature or road, or to name a locality or amend its boundary. Both the OGN and Registrar of Geographic Names operate under the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 legislation.
