Drainage Districts

Drainage Districts oversee funding, construction and maintenance of flood control measures such as levies and drainage systems. They are authorized to sell bonds and levy tax assessments for funding and are managed by a board of commissioners. Washington counties are authorized to establish drainage districts by the state legislature in 1895 and are formed by citizen petition.
