VPRS 894 Minute Books (1862 - 1872); Ministers Orders (1872 - 1875)

This series primarily contains the Minute Books of the Board of Education. After the appointment of the first Minister of Public Instruction in 1872 and the establishment of VA 714 Education Department, the final volume was used to record his Orders and Decisions. This latter series is the first section of VPRS 917 Minister's Order Books.Minutes record the date, the members of the Board attending and the proceedings. For details of deliberations regarding applications for aid and appointments reference is made to the full listing contained in VPRS 899 Agenda and Rough Minute Book. Numbers with A in the margins refer to agenda numbers.The first volume of the Minister's Orders are contained in the final volume of the Minute Books. The Orders are to do with such matters as appointments of and granting of leave to teachers, the establishment of new schools, the granting of school holidays, grants for schools, approvals of expenditure and public complaints to the Minister.Reference numbers in the margin are to correspondence, to Board of Advice numbers, to school numbers or to branches within the Education Department (such as Accounts) which were responsible for the matter which was the subject of the order. Reference numbers following the Order are to the registered number of correspondence to which the Order related with the date of the Order. Recognition is given each time there was a change of Minister of Public Instruction.
