Parallel, independent colonies of Escherichia coli were gradually evolved to high ethanol tolerance for approximately 2 years. This experiment resulted in eight lines that developed tolerance to very high (7% or more) ethanol concentrations, while all other parallel lines reached evolutionary dead ends. The emergence of hypermutation was the driving force underlying the adaptation to very high ethanol concentrations.
