A custom mcrA gene (Methyl-coenzyme M reductase A) reference database with 39,544 sequences and assigned taxonomy for studying methanogens with metabarcoding. Sequences in database were extracted from GenBank 20.9.2023. In the database, seven taxonomic levels are associated with each mcrA sequence in the following order: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species, with undefined levels recorded as uncultured. The database is in DADA2 format.
