Histoplasma samples from South America

Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease that affects immunocompromised and healthy patients. Genome sequencing has revealed that Histoplasma is composed of several phylogenetic species. Nonetheless, the genetic diversity of the pathogen remains largely unknown, especially in the tropics. Here, we present genome data of Histoplasma isolates from the Amazon basin. We use a combination of phylogenetics and population genetics to report a previously unidentified clade of Histoplasma endemic to the Amazon basin that is sister to the current genetic models of Histoplasma.
