Mass and Dynamical Structure of the Lensing Clusters Cl0024+17 and Cl2244-02

For the two of the most intersting distant galaxy cluster featuring spectacularlensing effects, Cl0024+17 and Cl224402 there is still an unsolved mass discrepancy between Xray and lensing mass determinations. While the previous ROSATHRI and ASCA observations don.t provide the means for an analysis of the temperature structure of the clusters and the surface brightness at larger radii, theproposed XMM observations are ideally suited to probably resolve this discrepancy. We will also be able to probe the core region of the clusters in detailfor a more refined comparison to the lensing models. CL0024+17 has the richeststrong lensing features and weak lensing shear has been detected out to thelargest radius in any cluster.
