From 1864, the State Government subsidised institutions that were established with the object of saving human life, promoting health, temperance or morality, preventing cruelty or vice, or for other philanthropic or humane purposes and were funded by voluntary contributions from the public.The Hospitals and Charities Act 1922 established The Charities Board of Victoria, which was responsible for recommending and contributing funding for particular institutions.These records consist of contingencies that the Accountant of the Board submitted to Treasury for funding payments made to particular institutions that the Board required reimbursement for.Subsequent payments to the Board were recorded in VPRS 12117 Register of Credits - Hospital and Charities Fund Maintenance & Hospital Benefits Fund.Entries in this series are summarised in VPRS 11334 Trust Fund Ledgers.
